Steve the hamster

Steve is an 18 month old longhaired syrian hamster. He has been receiving treatment for an abscess on his left cheek.

Sadly this did not respond to medical treatment. So Anna admitted Steve for a general anaesthetic to have it surgically removed.
Steve has taken the procedure in his stride and was back to his usual self by the evening of the operation.
Abscesses in small mammals don’t respond well to antibiotics and often surgical treatment is the best option for a full recovery
There is a risk to general anaesthesia in these small species. But equally there is a risk to long term antibiotics. So as Steve demonstrates, often we are better to make the decision to operate.
