It’s time for pet of the month again!

Meet Buchaille, who is a 6 year old black Labrador.

buchaille 2

Buchaille was taken to Glasgow Small Animal Hospital’s out of hour’s service after ingesting an entire chocolate cake, including icing and candles. He consumed this during the birthday party may we add!

It was established he had consumed twice the fatal dose for a dog of his size, fortunately for Buchaille his owner acted quickly and took him up to the hospital where he was examined and the vet administered an injection to induce vomiting.

It is essential the stomach is emptied before any of the chocolate has been digested and absorbed into the dog’s body.

He was kept in overnight for close observation of his clinical signs and for intravenous fluid therapy.  The following day he was transferred back to us so we could continue his intravenous drip and for further monitoring. Prior to Buchaille being discharged we took a blood sample to check his kidney parameters. It was a relief to see they were within normal limits and he was given the all clear to go home!

Chocolate contains a chemical called theobromide which is poisonous to dogs. The darker the chocolate the more theobromide it contains. It mainly affects the heart, central nervous system and kidneys.

Symptoms usually occur within 4-24 hours after ingestion and include vomiting, diarrhoea, restlessness, hyperactivity, rapid breathing, rapid heart rate, weakness and seizures.

For a 30kg Labrador we would expect to see a fatal toxic reaction if they consumed 1kg of milk chocolate, ½ kg of dark chocolate or 170g of baking chocolate. It should be noted that signs of poisoning will still be seen if less than this quantity has been ingested. We recommend erring on the side of caution and always telephoning the vet practice for advice day or night if you are at all concerned your dog has ingested chocolate.

The faster the treatment can be initiated the better the prognosis for the dog.
